Mission Statement

Seattle Pro Musica exists to enrich the lives of audiences and singers by expressing the human spirit through music and seeks to increase appreciation of and access to the choral art.

Organizational Background

Seattle Pro Musica, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was founded in 1972.

Artistic Director

Karen P. Thomas, conductor and composer, has been Conductor and Executive/Artistic Director of Seattle Pro Musica since 1987, and has conducted throughout the United States and across Europe. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships.

Musicians

Seattle Pro Musica consists of 70 singers, comprising a diverse group of individuals ranging from music educators to doctors and engineers. In addition to the Artistic Director, the music staff consists of four section leaders and an accompanist.

Performances

The annual season is a three-program series of eight or more performances. Additionally the choir performs by invitation at international and national music festivals, conventions and conferences. In 2010 Seattle Pro Musica was a featured ensemble at the ACDA Regional Conference, Northwest Division. 

Venues

Seattle Pro Musica performs regularly at Bastyr University in Bothell, is a resident ensemble of St. James Cathedral in Seattle, and will be performing at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in 2010 as well. Seattle Pro Musica has also hosted a major NEA-funded festival in Seattle’s Benaroya Hall and performed at numerous other venues in the Puget Sound area.

Attendance

More than 4,000 people attend Seattle Pro Musica performances annually, and an audience of 368,000 regularly hears our performances on radio broadcasts.

Budget

The operating budget for the 2010-2011 season is $255,000.

Recordings

Seattle Pro Musica has recorded seven albums which are all available both on our website as compact discs and as downloads. CDs and downloads are also available through prominent national retailers such as iTunes, amazon.com, CD Baby, Napster.com, Arkiv, and Primarily A Capella.

New Works

The music of American composers features prominently in Seattle Pro Musica’s repertoire.  In May 2010 Seattle Pro Musica offered four world premieres including a premiere of acommissioned piece by Ivan Moody. Seattle Pro Musica regularly commissions and presents world premieres of new works, with a special emphasis on composers of the Northwest. The 2006-2007 season focused on “American Masterpieces,” works by American composers.

Education & Outreach

Seattle Pro Musica has an education and outreach program whose mission is to provide a choral arts education to area school students, particularly low-income students, with otherwise little or no access to music or other arts education.

Recent Achievements

In June 2010 Seattle Pro Musica was announced as a finalist for The American Prize.
For the 2006-2007 season, Seattle Pro Musica was selected as only one of seven choirs in the nation to participate in the National Endowment for the Arts’s American Masterpieces Choral Initiative. Under the NEA’s auspices, Seattle Pro Musica hosted a major regional choral festival, June 15-17, 2007, and appeared in many venues throughout the Pacific Northwest during the season. In 2005 Seattle Pro Musica was a guest on NPR’s St. Paul Sunday, and in 2003 was honored with the national Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence. Seattle Pro Musica has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts for our 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, and 2007-2008 seasons.
